Ciovo Island For Your Summer Holidays

Ciovo Island For Your Summer Holidays

Ciovo (Ciovo; en. pron. chiovo) is a small island in central Dalmatia, an indivisible part of Trogir town and Trogir Riviera. The largest places on the island are: Okrug Gornji, Okrug Donji, Arbanija and Slatina.

This island in past years has been unreasonably bypassed by tourists. I’ve been always wondering how come this beautiful island has been less advertised. However, you can’t be wrong if you chose this island for your summer holidays.

Ciovo is the biggest island in the Trogir archipelago, It’s around 28.8 square kilometers with less than 6000 inhabitants who permanently live there. The island’s serious problem used to be, its connection with maniland.

It wasn’t long time ago when crossing the small and overcrowded bridge between Trogir town and island, was a nightmare. In high season road traffic over the bridge was at or near a standstill. Perhaps this was one of the reasons for the island’s negligence.

Where’s Ciovo island and how to reach it?

Luckily for locals this nightmare ended up with a happy epilogue.  On July 2017, was finally inaugurated and released a long-awaited new bridge connecting the island with the mainland.

It’s definitely the closest island to the mainland along Adriatic coast. It’s the nearest island or sometimes  considered peninsula to Split Airport. It’s distant little more than 6 miles. It will be great feeling to dive in clear waters just an hour after you have disembarked from the plane.

Once on the island you can find excellent boat connections from Trogir or Slatina village to Split town. If you prefer to take a bus to visit Split, there is a regular public bus connection N° 37 to Split town. If you are traveling by car, just cross the new bridge that it’s only 4 Km from Split airport in direction of Trogir town.

From Ciovo island you can easily reach Krka and Plitvice National Parks. Krka National Park is only 39 miles from Ciovo, while to get to Plitvice you need a 3 hour drive.

Getting to Trogir and Ciovo from Split:

  • Jadrolinija line 606 – doesn’t sail from Split. It keeps only connection to Drvenik islands from Trogir.
  • Bura Company has regular fast boat connection from Split to Slatine (Ciovo island) and Trogir. (It’s only for foot passengers).

Ciovo Island Beaches

When you decide island Ciovo for your holidays, the beaches are the best part of the island. All beaches are close to the mainland, and easily accessible whether you coming by car or on foot.

On the island one can find all kinds of beaches, from sandy, pebble to rocky, from frequently visited  to some truly beautiful deserted beaches. For those who are really looking for peace and quiet, I recommend to hire a boat and make a trip to some isolated and hidden beaches.

If you are looking for the best beaches for you holiday on Ciovo island, here is a selection of the best and most popular ones. The beaches are for everyone from families with children, those who like to have a drink on a beach, jumping in the sea from the bar, nightlife lovers or naturist fans.

Near Okrug Gornji village, the most popular tourist destination on the island, don’t miss famous Saldun Bay. There are sandy beaches from either side of bay.

These beaches are rather crowded during the high season. If you are looking for daytime and nighttime activities, these beaches offer beach bars, water sports, diving and sampling the food in many bars and restaurants. For boat rentals and water sports fans – call Max Rent Watersports.

For visitors searching for more relaxed and quiet vacation away from the crowds, I suggest to visit Mavarscica  a magnificent cove with pebbly beach surrounded by pine woods.

It is situated just south of Okrug Gornji. Between Okrug Gornji and smaller Okrug Donji villages one can find isolated houses to rent and secluded beaches suitable for nudist fans.

On the eastern side of the island of Ciovo, just before the small village of Slatine looking at Split Marjan Hill, these is Kava Beach. It’s the largest of a series of beaches that can be found in the Slatine bay.

Things to see on Ciovo island

Ciovo offers a calmer and less crowded atmosphere. Besides beautiful beaches and secluded bays, Ciovo island offers many possibilities for a great holiday.

Since Ciovo is often an bypassed  destination, it offers cheaper accommodation than some other destinations. The island has a typical Mediterranean climate, rich vegetation, and it’s ideal destination for families with children.

The real tourist offer of the island is not only beautiful nature and attractive beaches but also a rich cultural and historical heritage. One of these location is the sanctuary of Our Lady of Prizidnica.

This sacral object on Ciovo, near Slatine village  is truly isolated and it is possible to reach by car or by boat, but only in favorable weather conditions. This is a unique place of peace, silence and contemplation.

The church and refuge for monks and hermitages were built in the sixteenth century and belongs to the parish of Slatine village. Although the steep path is regularly maintained, walking to the church is long and hard but it’s worth visiting.

Besides above isolated sanctuary, there are some more popular sights to visit:

  • A small church of St. Peter in Supetarska lagoon, near Slatine village.
  • In village Zedno (situated inland) you can visit church of St. Maurice.
  • Dominican monastery in village Arbanija contains interesting paintings from the 17th century.

Where to stay on Ciovo island

Since the island Ciovo is a kind of annex of the Trogir city, it offers a lot of possibilities for vacation. Ciovo island apartments rentals are the best solution for a pleasant holiday on this Riviera, saving up to 40 % compared to a hotel.

There are not too many hotels on the island. I would recommend on of new boutique hotel, which Travel Magazine Condé Nast Traveler described as the most ‘photogenic Croatian hotel swimming pool’.

Brown Beach House & Spa

Brown Beach House & Spa, part of Tel Aviv’s Tel Aviv-based Israel Telescope hotel, is one of the hotels you can not miss.
